Legend has it that in 1920s Paris a tan was considered “peasant skin” — until Coco Chanel came back from the Riviera sun-kissed. Paris took one look and ran off to sunbathe. Her beauty code is as simple as grandma’s dumpling recipe: warm skin, dark defined brows, lined eyes and red lips. Here’s how to recreate a Coco Chanel makeup look on an everyday face — in 6 steps and about 15 minutes. Faster than a taxi on a Friday night.

Step 1. Concealer: erasing the “haven’t slept since Monday” look

With the tip of your ring finger, apply a little corrector to the dark area under the eye and tap it in, working from the inner corner outwards. Shade 02 has a yellow undertone that neutralises bluish and purple circles. City wisdom: blue is cancelled with yellow — like a fight in the group chat with a funny sticker.
💡 How to choose your shade. Pick by the colour of your circles, not your mood. SINART concealer comes in three shades: 02 (yellow) — for blue and purple circles, best for olive skin; 03 (salmon) — for greenish and greyish circles; 04 (light) — for fair skin: hides circles and brightens.
Tip. Don’t rub it in like hand cream on a bus — tap it. That way it lasts longer.
Step 2. Powder: so your nose doesn’t shine like a streetlight

With a slightly damp sponge, press powder under the eyes and onto the T-zone: forehead, nose, chin. Skin turns softly matte and the redness around the nose fades.
💡 Why a sponge, not a brush. A brush lays powder on top, where it can settle into fine lines under the eyes. A damp sponge presses it into the skin in a thin layer: the concealer stays put and skin looks like skin, not powder.
Step 3. Bronzer: the tan Chanel made fashionable

With a big brush, apply bronzer to each side of the face in a “3” shape: from the temple along the hairline, under the cheekbone, then along the jaw. Blend outwards. The goal is “just back from the Riviera”, not “fell asleep on the beach”.
💡 How not to overdo it. Bronzer should be 1–2 shades darker than your skin, and the brush big and fluffy for a soft, patch-free shadow. Two light layers beat one heavy one.
Tip. A light touch of bronzer on the neck makes the tan look natural, not like a mask.
Step 4. Brows: dark, defined, full of character

Fill in the brow with fine hair-like strokes in the direction of growth, emphasise the arch and sharpen the tail. In photos from the 1920s–30s, Chanel’s brows are exactly that — dark and defined. Brows are your face’s signature, so sign with confidence.
💡 How to choose your shade. The marker comes in 4 shades: 01 Taupe — for ash and light brown hair, 04 Chocolate and 05 Brown — for chestnut, 06 Dark Brown — for dark hair and the Coco look. Brunettes go a shade lighter than their hair, blondes a shade darker.
Step 5. Pencil along the lash line: a deeper gaze

Close your eye and draw a thin line as close to the lashes as possible, then smudge it slightly. On the lower lid — only the outer third. No dramatic wings here: Coco’s gaze is deep, not graffiti on a fence.
💡 Why a pencil, not a liner. Pencil is easy to smudge, so the line stays soft, 1920s-style, and a cotton bud fixes any mistake. Keep the line right against the lashes so there are no gaps.
Step 6. Red lipstick: Coco’s final chord

Apply red lipstick: first define the Cupid’s bow of the upper lip, then fill in the colour. Chanel considered red lips the finishing touch of any look. Red lipstick is like a well-chosen word: say it once and everyone remembers.
💡 To make it last. Apply one layer, blot with a tissue, then apply a second. Then your lipstick will survive both a coffee to go and a toast at the office party.
Tip. Want glossy lips like in 1930s photos? Dab clear gloss on the centre of the lips only — the colour stays, the edges stay crisp, and the lips shine.
Any red lipstick + a clear gloss on top: 04 LIPGLOSSPRO — for the glossy 1930s finish. The gloss alone won’t give the red colour.
Coco Chanel look details
Chanel’s makeup was always part of a whole look: the little black dress, long strands of pearls, pearl earrings, two-tone shoes, a quilted chain bag, a ribbon in the hair and a white camellia — her favourite flower. Folk wisdom: there’s no such thing as too many pearls.
Done: the Coco Chanel look

Six steps of makeup, a wavy bob, a little black dress and strands of pearls — and there’s Coco. Ready for a party, a photo shoot, or just a stroll down your street as if it were Rue Cambon.

The Coco look is one of the easiest vintage makeup looks. It works for a 1920s or Great Gatsby party, a Halloween without blood and cobwebs, a New Year office party, a vintage wedding, a themed photo shoot, or any evening when you want a classic with red lipstick.
How is 1920s makeup different from 1930s makeup?
The 1920s favoured dark smudged eyes, very thin brows and cupid’s-bow lips. The 1930s brought sun-kissed skin, fuller defined brows, a neat lash-line and red lips with a sharp cupid’s bow. Our Coco look is closer to the 1930s but works perfectly for a 1920s or Gatsby party too.
How to do vintage makeup at home, step by step?
Follow the 6 steps of this tutorial: concealer, powder, bronzer, brows, pencil along the lash line and red lipstick. It takes about 15 minutes and needs no professional skills.
Which lipstick to choose for a Coco Chanel look?
A classic red. For a glossy finish like in 1930s photos, add the clear 04 LIPGLOSSPRO gloss on top.
What if red lipstick is too much for the office or a work party?
Keep the skin, brows and liner, and soften the lips: fill them with 02 LIPLINERPRO in dusty rose and top with Epic Lip Oil 06 Rose Wine for a soft shine.
Does this makeup work for a 1950s look?
1950s makeup is a different era: lighter skin, winged “cat-eye” liner and powdery or red lips. Still, the red lipstick, defined brows and neat liner from this tutorial are a good base for a 50s look too.
Red lipstick and eyeliner: how not to look “too much”?
It’s all about balance: when the lips are bold, the lash line should be thin and smudged, as in step 5, and the skin even but warmed with bronzer. That way red-lipstick evening makeup looks expensive, not theatrical.
Does the Coco Chanel look work for Halloween or a themed party?
Yes — it’s the most elegant costume with zero zombie makeup. This tutorial’s makeup, a little black dress, a strand of pearls (faux is fine) and a white flower in your hair — and everyone will recognise you at the door.

Frequently asked questions
How do you do Coco Chanel makeup?
Six steps: concealer under the eyes and on redness, a light powder, bronzer for a warm tan, dark defined brows, a soft pencil line along the lashes and a warm red lipstick. The key to the look is contrast rather than brightness: even sun-kissed skin, crisp brows and red lips. The whole routine takes 15–20 minutes.
Which lipstick suits a Chanel look?
A warm, clean red — poppy or “fire” red, with no blue or raspberry undertone. Those were the shades worn in Paris in the 1920s and 30s. For intense colour, line the lips with a pencil first; for a soft shine, add a clear gloss on top.
How do you do 1920s makeup?
Classic 1920s makeup means pale, even skin, thin dark brows, darkened eyes and deep red “cupid’s bow” lips. Chanel modernised the look by adding a tan, more natural brows and a clean red lip. Our tutorial is exactly that wearable version of the twenties.
What can I take from the Chanel look for a Gatsby party?
Red lipstick, defined brows and a thin liner are the recognisable minimum. For a party, deepen the eyes with a darker pencil and add pearls, a black dress and a headband. The makeup from our steps is a base you can easily build up into a full Gatsby look.
What is in the “Coco Chanel Look” set?
The set includes 03 CONCEALER, the PROSPONGE PINK sponge, HD FINISHING POWDER, Sun Kissed bronzer and the 06 Old Money brow marker — 10% cheaper than buying them separately. Lipstick is not included: any warm red lipstick you own works for step 6.
